Is soya a complete protein containing all the essential amino acids needed by the human body?

Ms Breda Gavin, senior nutrition consultant at Food and Nutrition Specialists, said: 'Soya is the only plant food considered to be a complete protein in that it contains all the essential amino acids needed by the human body.'

Soya beans are also low in fat and a good source of fibre, iron, calcium, zinc, magnesium and B vitamins.

While fibre is necessary for healthy bowel function, B vitamins are important for releasing and metabolising energy from the food we eat.

Minerals like zinc and magnesium are critical aids in coping with enzymatic reactions.

Soya protein and heart disease

25g of soya protein a day, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.

My CRON experiment by Sara

Web Addrress: http://my-cr-life.blogspot.com/

Name of the blog: My CRON experiment

About the blogger:

Self-introduction by the blogger:

I'm Sara; I'm 35 years old and have been following a vegetarian CRON diet since the beginning of 2007. I'm 5'7" tall, and at the moment my weight fluctuates between 111-114lbs. On a good CRON day, my food intake is around 1200 calories with complete nutrition according to CoM. But I am in no way a role model for CR. I drink more glasses of wine than the average more disciplined CRONie(and more than are good for me) and I eat at least one or two restaurant meals a week where measuring calorie intake and nutrition is all but impossible. So at best I practice moderate CR, albeit with all the best intentions in the world. I live in the UK, dividing my time between my rural home and my partner's home in London.

My Weight Management from 2007-05-28 to 2008-08-28 (weight loss by Calories Restriction With Optimal Nutrition - CRON)

For me, the range of healthy weight is 50.9786 kg (BMI = 18.5) to 63.10324 kg (BMI = 22.9).

According to Health Promotion Board of Singapore, Singaporeans with BMI values of 23 kg/m2 and above have been found to be at risk of developing heart disease and diabetes.

Healthy Hair Diet recommended by Lynn Grieger

By: Lynn Grieger

If dry, limp hair is weighing you down, then this diet is for you.

Did you know that what you eat is reflected in the health of your hair?

All of the hair-revitalizing shampoos in the world won't help if you aren't nourishing your body.

Here's how the Healthy Hair Diet can help:

(1) Just like your body, your hair needs a balanced, nutritious diet to stay healthy. That's why this food plan contains a rainbow of fruits and vegetables that are loaded with vitamins and antioxidants, whole grains for minerals, nuts and seeds for minerals and vitamins, and lean protein for iron. A fortified breakfast cereal will help your body get all of the other good stuff it needs.

(2) Water not only hydrates your body, but helps keep your hair silky and shiny. This diet includes eight to 10 glasses of water and juices a day for maximum hydration.

(3) The fiber from fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes is good for your body and your hair. This meal plan features lots of fiber-containing food as an option at each meal.

(4) Soy products contain phytoestrogens -- estrogens from plants -- that may boost your health, so this diet offers soymilk as a beverage choice and soy nuts as a snack option.

Drink plenty of water to keep yourself well hydrated

Don't:

Don't Smoke

Don't Eat highly processed foods (most snack foods, cookies, cakes, candies)

What is smoothie?

A smoothie is a blended, chilled, sweet beverage made from fresh fruit. In addition to fruit, many smoothies include crushed ice, frozen fruit, or frozen yogurt.

They have a milkshake-like consistency which is thicker than slush drinks.

Unlike milkshakes, they do not usually contain ice cream, but can contain milk.

Smoothies are marketed to health-conscious people, and some restaurants offer add-ins such as soy milk, whey powder, green tea, herbal supplements, or nutritional supplement mixes.

Smoothies became available in the United States in the late 1960s when ice cream vendors and health food stores began selling them.

By the 1990s and 2000s, smoothies became available at mainstream cafés and coffee shops, and in pre-bottled versions at supermarkets.

Take report on soy and sperm count study with pinch of salt

The following a letter by Boon Yee Yeong (Ms), a Nutritionist, to the Forum of the Straits Times dated 13 August 2008.

I REFER to the Reuters report 'Soy-based foods linked to low sperm count' (in the Straits Times of July 30 2008). The story, which refers to a study, is misleading.

Based on scientific reviews, this study is confounded by many issues, hence the results should be viewed with much caution.

In the study quoted by the report, Dr Jorge Chavarro found that 'soyfood and soy isoflavone intakes were unrelated to total sperm count, ejaculate volume, sperm motility, or sperm morphology', which are the important measures of sperm quality and male fertility.'
The study also did not determine what other foods, medications, supplements, existing medical conditions, sexual activities or environmental factors may have directly affected the drop in sperm count.

The study also classified high intakes of soyfoods as less than three ounces (85g) of a beverage per day. This is not considered a high intake of any food under most circumstances.

Like most epidemiological reports, this study is retrospective and inherently subject to a variety of biases. The total study population was small, 100 subjects, and little is known or reported about other dietary, stress factors, medications, or lifestyle issues that might also affect sperm count in these men.

It is well-established that of all semen parameters, variation in count is highly variable from day to day and seasonally in all men.

Dr Chavarro found that the men with the highest soyfood intake produced more ejaculate fluid volume with equivalent amounts of sperm count as those with lower intakes. This 'watering-down effect' of sperm concentration should not be mistakenly associated with a decrease in fertility.

Obesity may be the explanation for the negative findings of this study. Dr Chavarro found high soyfood intakes were associated with lower sperm concentration, but 'the association was more pronounced among overweight and obese men than among lean men.'

Men with high levels of body fat are likely to produce more oestrogen than their slimmer counterparts.

Dr Chavarro's study conflicts with the large body of research including United States government and National Institute of Health-sponsored human and primate research, in which controlled amounts of isoflavones from soy were fed and no effect on quantity, quality or motility of sperm were observed.

Soya bean may cut breast cancer risk [Ref: H08H12-1421]

Origianl Title of the article: Soya bean cuts breast cancer risk

Singapore - Soya bean, a perennial Asian staple, reduces the risk of breast cancer among Chinese women, a published study said on Tuesday.

Conducted by the National University of Singapore (NUH), the University of Southern California and the University of Minnesota, the study tracked more than 34,000 Chinese women in Singapore aged 45 to 74 for a decade.

Women who consumed soya proteins in amounts more than in a serving of soya bean curd or a glass of soya bean milk were 18 per cent less likely to develop breast cancer than those who ate less, said the findings in The Straits Times.

Eating a serving of soya bean curd or drinking a glass of the milk every day reduces the risk, the study said.

'Our study shows that the amount of soya needed is not high, and is easily achievable in a typical Asian diet,' NUH associate professor Koh Woon Puay was quoted as saying.

Post-menopausal women, those with a higher body mass index and those who had consumed soya for longer, experienced the greatest reductions in risk, the study found.

The results are similar to those of eight other studies conducted on Asians. One in Japan showed an average 12 per cent reduction in breast cancer risk for those who eat the soya bean.

Studies on Caucasian women have been inconclusive, possibly because of the low levels of soya involved, the report said.

Koh cautioned against consuming too much soya, which could lead to conditions such as gout.

Separately, NUS' Centre for Molecular Epidemiology is planning a 10-year study of 12,000 Chinese, Malay and Indian women, with and without breast cancer, to find out how genetic and lifestyle factors interact to determine breast cancer risks.

Source: Straits Times dated 2008-08-12.

My comments: The study may not be conclusive because women who consume soya proteins regularly are normally very health conscious and have healthy diet on daily basis.

Hey boss, I'm just power napping [Ref: H080806]

Do you sleep on the job? If your answer is yes, snooze right on because it could be great for you and even better for your boss.

At least that's what Dr William Anthony, who co-authored The Art Of Napping At Work with his wife, Camille, told health website WebMD.

He maintains that a power nap of about 20 minutes has been proven to increase alertness and overall productivity in workers.

Dr Anthony, who says that the post-nap energy spike can last for several hours, has a couch with a homemade Afghan blanket in his own office at Boston University's Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation.

Not many bosses may agree. Dr Anthony said: 'People think nappers are slothful or lazy. Look at the words surrounding napping: stealing a nap or getting caught napping - they're all pejorative.'

He said that employers often tell him they aren't paying people to sleep.

But he thinks a little shut-eye on the job is even better than what employees already have a right to - lunch or coffee breaks.

Dr Anthony's informal surveys have revealed that while women are more sleep-deprived - for a combination of physiological and social reasons, such as their tendency to bear the brunt of childcare - they report more fear of napping during work hours.

'We were going to do a book on that but we haven't started yet,' Dr Anthony said. 'I guess we've been napping too much.'

Stools and Your Health -- Output matters (THE BRISTOL STOOL SCALE) - Bowel Movement

Depending on whether your stools are hard and lumpy like nuts, or sausage shaped and smooth, a gastroenterologist can tell the state of your health. STACEY CHIA reports

What's your type? A psychologist may 'look' into your head to gauge if you are a highly driven Type A or have a relaxed Type B personality.

A gastroenterologist will get straight to the bottom of the matter by looking at your stool type which can give an idea of the state of your health.

There is even a seven-point visual indicator - the Bristol Stool Scale - to tell how long your stool has been in your colon, and what it can mean.

The seven types on the scale, named after the British university that came up with it, are:

THE BRISTOL STOOL SCALE:

Type 1 - Separate hard lumps, like nuts
Type 2 - Sausage-shaped and lumpy
Type 3 - Sausage-shaped with cracks
Type 4 - Sausage-shaped, smooth and soft
Type 5 - Soft blobs, passed out easily
Type 6 - Fluffy pieces and mushy
Type 7 - Watery with no solid pieces

Types 1 and 2 are considered constipated, while 6 and 7 are under the diarrhoea group; the normal stools are those that fall under types 3, 4 and 5.

Dr Yap Chin Kong from Yap Chin Kong Gastroenterology & Liver Clinic said the scale is useful in that it indicates stool 'transit time'. A long transit time implies constipation and a short transit time, diarrhoea.

Transit time is the time stool stays in the colon before it is passed out.

'Types 1 and 2 are considered constipated, while 6 and 7 are under the diarrhoea group; the normal stools are those that fall under types 3, 4 and 5,' he said.

Dr Gwee Kok Ann, consultant gastroenterologist at Gleneagles Hospital, said Type 1 stool has a transit time of over 72 hours or longer, while Type 4 - the ideal - is most easily expelled, with a transit time of 24 hours.

Dr Yap added that the usual frequency of stool being passed out ranges from three times a day to once every three days.

While most people only 'go' when they feel the urge, he believes that people should develop good toilet habit from childhood.

This means waking up early, having breakfast, then waiting for the urge to move the bowels. This will usually occur within 30 minutes to an hour for many people.

Regular exercise and eating sufficient fruits and vegetables can help in developing good toilet habit.

'Someone who gets up late and rushes off to school or work after eating breakfast quickly may develop the urge but postpone nature's call or not even have the urge because the mind overrides it,' said Dr Yap.

Not moving the bowels regularly may lead to complications for the young and very old, Dr Gwee said. A large mass of stool stuck in the rectum can cause it to overstretch.

'When this happens, the muscle in the rectum's wall loses its tone. There will then be difficulty contracting the muscle to evacuate the contents. This usually affects young children and the elderly,' he added.

He said that, should this happen, it can give rise to abdominal cramps and vomiting in children.
'As for some elderly patients, stool pellets may actually spill out without their being aware, while others may develop ulcers in the rectum arising from the pressure placed on the wall of the rectum by very hard stools,' he said.

For the layman, the scale comes in handy in noting changes in bowel patterns.

'If you have experienced a recent change in your bowel pattern without a clear reason, or if there are alarming signs such as blood, pain or fever, you should see a doctor,' said Dr Yap.

However, some doctors like Dr Tan Chi Chiu, consultant gastroenterologist and physician at Gastroenterology & Medicine International, cautioned against over-reliance on the scale as a precise gauge of transit time.

'It is not precise. Different people have different grades of stool for similar transit times,' he explained.

Soy-based foods linked to low sperm count

To all the men out there who are incorporating more soy into their meals for a healthier diet. There may be a downside, says a new study

Eating half a serving a day of soy-based foods could be enough to significantly lower a man's sperm count, researchers in the United States said last Wednesday.

Their study is the largest to look at the relationship between human semen quality and a plant form of the female sex hormone oestrogen known as phytoestrogen, which is plentiful in soy-rich foods.

'We found that men who consume the highest amounts of soy foods in this study had a lower sperm concentration compared to those who did not consume soy foods,' said Dr Jorge Chavarro of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, whose study appeared in the journal, Human Reproduction.

'It was a relatively large difference,' Dr Chavarro said.

He said studies in animals have linked high consumption of plant-derived oestrogens known as isoflavones with infertility but, so far there has been little evidence of their effect in humans.
'We wanted to know if it would affect human sperm production and could serve as a marker for the effects on the reproductive system,' he said.

His team analysed the intake of 15 soy-based foods in 99 men who went to a fertility clinic between 2000 and 2006.

They were asked how much and how often in the prior three months they had eaten soy-rich foods including: tofu, tempeh, tofu or soy sausages, soy burgers, soy milk, cheese, yogurt and ice cream, and other soy products such as drinks, powders and energy bars.

Because different foods have different levels of isoflavones in them, the researchers set a standard for serving sizes of particular foods. Then they divided the men into groups according to soy consumption levels. Men in the highest group on average ate half a serving per day.
'In terms of their isoflavone content, that is comparable to having one cup of soy milk or one serving of tofu, tempeh or soy burgers every other day,' Dr Chavarro said.

The difference was striking. Men in the highest intake category had 41 million sperm per millilitre less than men who ate no soy foods.

A normal sperm count ranges from 80 million to 120 million per millilitre, and a sperm count of 20 million per millilitre or below is considered low.

'It suggests soy foods could have some deleterious effect on the reproductive system and especially on sperm production,' he said.

The researchers found the association between soy foods and lower sperm count was stronger in overweight men which might suggest hormones are playing a role.

'Men who are overweight or obese tend to have higher levels of androgen-produced oestrogen. They are converting a male hormone into a female hormone in their fat. The more body fat you have, the more oestrogen you produce in your fat,' Dr Chavarro said.

He said the study was not sufficient to suggest that soy intake would have health implications such as inducing infertility.

Much bigger studies would be needed to answer that question, he added.
