Note: From 2010-02-01, Watson weighing scale had replaced Camry, which became faulty. In the past reading of Camry was about 500g more than that of Watson. To maintain consistency, so my weight =Watson reading (in kg) + 500g.

On 2010-03-28, at about 7.40 am, my weight by Camry = 55.9 kg + 500g = 56.4 kg. I also used Tanita BC-532 Body Composition Monitor to confirm that my weight was 56.4 kg.

My current BMI is within the healthy range of 18.5 to 22.9.

For me, the range of healthy weight is 50.9786 kg (BMI = 18.5) to 63.10324 kg (BMI = 22.9).

People with BMI values of 23 kg/m2 (or 25 kg/m2 according to some sources) and above have been found to be at risk of developing heart disease and diabetes.

To be healthy, I must have a healthy weight.

Be as lean as possible without being underweight, as recommended by World Cancer Prevention Foundation, United Kingdom.

Controlling your weight is key to lowering stroke risk

Email From: Harvard Medical School

Sent: Saturday, 16 January 2016, 22:00

There is a lot you can do to lower your chances of having a stroke. Even if you've already had a stroke or TIA ("mini-stroke"), you can take steps to prevent another.

Controlling your weight is an important way to lower stroke risk. Excess pounds strain the entire circulatory system and can lead to other health conditions, including high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and obstructive sleep apnea. But losing as little as 5% to 10% of your starting weight can lower your blood pressure and other stroke risk factors.

Of course, you'll need to keep the weight off for good, not just while you're on a diet. The tips below can help you shed pounds and keep them off:

Move more. Exercise is one obvious way to burn off calories. But another approach is to increase your everyday activity wherever you can — walking, fidgeting, pacing while on the phone, taking stairs instead of the elevator.

Skip the sipped calories. Sodas, lattes, sports drinks, energy drinks, and even fruit juices are packed with unnecessary calories. Worse, your body doesn't account for them the way it registers solid calories, so you can keep chugging them before your internal "fullness" mechanism tells you to stop. Instead, try unsweetened coffee or tea, or flavor your own sparkling water with a slice of lemon or lime, a sprig of fresh mint, or a few raspberries.

Eat more whole foods. If you eat more unprocessed foods — such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains — you'll fill yourself up on meals that take a long time to digest. Plus, whole foods are full of vitamins, minerals, and fiber and tend to be lower in salt — which is better for your blood pressure, too.

Find healthier snacks. Snack time is many people's downfall — but you don't have to skip it as long as you snack wisely. Try carrot sticks as a sweet, crunchy alternative to crackers or potato chips, or air-popped popcorn (provided you skip the butter and salt and season it with your favorite spices instead). For a satisfying blend of carbs and protein, try a dollop of sunflower seed butter on apple slices.

What is sporadic ataxia?

What is sporadic ataxia?

(1) Progressive ataxia related to cerebellar abnormality

(2) No family history, so genetic cause unlikely (patients are singletons)

(3) Also called idiopathic ataxia

(4) Diagnosis of exclusion, because many known diseases may masquerade as sporadic ataxia

(5) Age at onset typically >50 years

Genetic testing for SCA (Spinocerebellar Ataxias)

Genetic testing for SCA has exploded in the past decade (2) (6) (4). More than a dozen SCA genes can now be tested through commercial labs, and the number seems to grow every year.

There are five distinct scenarios in which gene testing can be used by clinicians: diagnostic testing, predictive testing, prenatal testing, carrier testing, and risk factor assessment. In reality, however, only diagnostic and predictive testing concern the practicing neuro-ophthalmologist or neurologist. Gene tests are a powerful new addition to our diagnostic arsenal; we use them primarily to achieve an accurate diagnosis in a patient with specific neurologic symptoms.

A gene test does not differ much from testing blood chemistry profiles to establish a medical diagnosis. A positive test result, however, carries profound implications for patients and their families. Thus, genetic testing should be performed only after the patient has been counseled on the potential consequences of the results, both positive and negative. Once a genetic diagnosis is made in a symptomatic patient, we may be asked to assist other family members in obtaining predictive testing (screening for a mutation in someone who is at risk for a familial disease). Handling such queries from patients and their families is an unavoidable part of modern medicine. Web sites that provide useful updated information on genetic diseases, genetic tests, genetic counseling and the human genome include
Www.genetestsorg , the most useful site, contains frequently updated reviews of neurogenetic disorders and searchable lists of testing labs with contact information.
The primary benefit of diagnostic genetic testing is that it may provide a specific and accurate diagnosis. For example, an SCA gene test in a patient whose symptoms are consistent with a genetic form of ataxia, but whose family history is uncertain or absent, can confirm the clinical diagnosis with efficiency, economy, and certainty. In an ataxic patient, gene tests are sensitive and specific, whereas brain MRI is not. In SCAs, gene testing can specify a diagnosis from among a group of clinically similar genetic conditions. Even when a condition is currently incurable, as with the SCAs, establishing a specific diagnosis can put an end to the quest for an accurate diagnosis, permit an informed discussion of the prognosis and available treatments, and facilitate discussions of genetic risk to other family members. The psychological lift of simply putting a name to a previously mysterious disease, even if there is no cure, should not be underestimated for some patients.

Current commercially available genetic test “panels” include only the most common (SCA1, 2, 3, 6, and 7) and some less common (SCA 5, 8, 11, 10, 12, 13, 14 and 17), comprising 75% of the known SCA genes. Whereas a positive gene test for a specific SCA establishes the diagnosis, an entirely “negative” SCA gene test panel does not exclude a hereditary ataxia. Accordingly, physicians must take great care in conveying the significance of negative gene test results to their patients. When a person’s ataxia has slowly progressed over 10 years and is symmetrical in its clinical and radiographic features, the disease very likely has a genetic basis whether or not the genetic panel detects it. In the absence of a family history of ataxia, an autosomal recessive cause is probably more likely than an autosomal dominant cause. The most common recessive ataxia is Friedreich ataxia, for which genetic testing is highly sensitive and specific (7).

I Stopped using Zojirushi bread maker BB-HAQ10 on 7 January 2016.

At 6.10 pm on 7th January 2016, Thursday, I packed the Zojirushi bread maker model BB-HAQ10 in the packaging box because I have decided to stop using it to make bread. Its conditions is still OK.

I bought this machine on 29th August 2013 at S$199.00 (promotion price). I used it to make about 45 loaves of bread with mixed results.
