<figcaption>碧山亭学校于1981年停办。(作者提供)</figcaption></figure> <p>旧碧山亭学校校长郭明,至今虽然已离世将近30年,但我们今天说起碧山亭往事,时不时会从耆老口中听到“郭校长”这个名字和他的一些轶事。郭明自1967年担任碧山亭学校校长直到1981年学校停办才退休,好奇心促使我一直想查知郭校长的背景。</p>
<p>后来,我辗转查到耆老口中的郭校长灵位,得知他本名不叫郭明,而叫郭南盛,鹤山人,生于壬戌年(1922)9月14日,卒于丁丑年(1997)2月21日。郭校长享寿七十有八,他的灵骨现供奉在碧山亭大牌41号。</p>
<p>1870年创立的广惠肇碧山亭,是广惠肇三属人士的坟场。在20世纪初,因大量的南来移民,碧山亭坟场旁的甘榜山亭形成了住家和商店聚落。当时的广帮人士在1936年创建“广惠肇碧山亭义学”(后改名碧山亭学校),据说在碧山亭大庙内开课,为甘榜山亭、顺福村和附近的汤申路居民提供教育和学习机会。</p>
<p>本地文史研究者李国梁曾提到,碧山亭学校跟其他学校(如养正、南华、广福、静方女校、实用学校等)一样,同是华社自力更生,惠国惠民的时代产物。</p>

<p>郭明校长自1967年起任碧山亭学校第三任校长,直到1981年碧山亭学校停办。郭明校长也是“末代”校长,学校停办时他已年届59岁。此后他在碧山亭公所理事的盛情邀请下,加入碧山亭服务。郭校长在办公室处理文书打字工作,不但驾车送信,遇到杂工请假时还亲自扫地。</p>
<p>《联合早报》曾于1987年6月27日采访这位老校长,当时的报道标题是《“校长”送信兼扫地》。郭校长对记者说,他在宗乡会馆任职,不光是为了一份薪水,更重要的是服务社会。这实在是郭明校长让人钦佩的地方之一。</p>
<p>郭明校长不只是对碧山亭学校的教育有所贡献,他对广帮社区乃至新加坡的近代发展变迁还做出过一个“鲜为人知”的贡献。郭明校长在1981年左右耗时耗力拍摄保存了广帮碧山亭291座“总坟”黑白照片。他的这一举动,为后代保存了极其珍贵的广帮文化历史和照片文献。</p>

<p>我自2022年以来,着手清查碧山亭留存的“总坟”黑白照片。秘书告诉我,这些保留至今的250张珍贵照片,正是郭明校长当年亲手拍摄的。后来,我根据这些照片以及郭明校长制作的目录,才得以“按图索骥”陆续搜寻那些早已遗失或湮灭的总坟旧照。也因为能找齐总坟照片,我们才得以进一步研究旧时广帮总坟的文化(譬如风水山向、墓联文字、坟墓造型等)。</p>
<p>碧山亭从1870年买地建坟场,发展到1973年时,已拥有324英亩(90公顷)的山地,划分为10个亭和大庙。旧时碧山亭坟场除埋葬10万个先人的坟墓,还从第一亭至第七亭以及大庙,分别拨出坟地作为广惠肇三属各县、各乡、宗亲、行业公会的总坟。碧山亭在1979年左右开始“封山”清挖所有总坟和私坟。</p>
<p>在1981年分段进行挖掘工作之际,当时的理监事委托郭明校长协助坟地挖掘的摄录工作。郭校长回忆道:“由于甚多旧总坟无人清理与拜祭,山坟杂草丛生将墓碑遮盖,部分墓碑被树木倒压,须利用斧头与镰刀清除,始能摄录。有些墓碑失修碑文无法辨清,增加摄录工作困难重重,花了年余始将所有总坟摄录。”(《广惠肇碧山亭庆祝第一一八周年纪念特刊》,1988)</p>
<p>于此可见,当时清山之时要进行摄录工作,郭明校长的工作艰巨,既要清除杂草大树,又要详细记录当时总坟的石碑文字等。除此之外,郭校长还整理写成《广惠肇碧山亭各会馆社团总坟集编名录》。可见郭明校长在清山前,为总坟的摄录和文字整理,着实付出巨大心血和贡献。可以说,碧山亭的旧时坟山资料得以保存至今,实为郭明校长之心血功劳。</p>
<h3>亲自帮忙清理灰烬</h3>
<p>我在2023年从碧山亭旧档案库里,偶然翻出和发现郭明校长在1982至83年油印的大叠总坟碑石记录资料(另有几份手稿记录私坟目录),上面详细备注了各总坟“山向”,这简直是无比珍贵的史料文献!由于郭明校长是亲历目睹“总坟”的前辈,因此他所做的记录(包括那几份手稿)无疑是最直接可靠的第一手记录。</p>
<p>曾与他共事的碧山亭资深秘书陈翠玲转告我说,郭明校长是一位非常勤劳的校长,在公所做事的时候,不时亲自去“化帛炉”帮忙清理灰烬。这是一件极吃力又不讨好的苦差,但郭明校长并没有因此而推辞。与郭明校长有交往之缘的耆老曾锡源也告诉我,他印象中的郭明校长性格沉默寡言,办事干练从不怕吃苦。</p>
<p>郭校长已离世多年。遗憾的是,我生也晚,未及亲见夫子一面。如今,我们已陆续找回当年他亲手拍下的“总坟”黑白照片,并将所有黑白照片扫描数码化永久珍藏。今天面对这众多丰厚的照片文化遗产,我们总算可以告慰郭明校长,他当年的努力一定会为今后的广帮和其他兴趣人士起到文化传承作用。</p>

It is akin to intermittent fasting, and both practices have been associated with improved kidney health, among other potential health benefits.</div><div><br></div><div>Though the religious and cultural contexts differ, fasting during Ramadan and intermittent fasting share several similarities.</div><div><br></div><div>The duration of daily fasting during Ramadan varies according to the time from sunrise to sunset in a particular location. Muslims in Singapore began fasting on March 12 in 2024, and typically fast for about 13 hours each day. </div><div><br></div><div>Intermittent fasting, on the other hand, is voluntary. The 16/8 method, for example, also known as time-restricted eating, involves fasting for 16 hours a day and leaving an eight-hour window during the day to eat.</div><div><br></div><div>Comparing the two, Dr Wong Weng Kin, a senior consultant nephrologist at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, says fasting during Ramadan and daily time-restricted eating are similar, as individuals eat only at specific times a day. </div><div><br></div><div>However, fasting during Ramadan requires a Muslim to abstain from food and drink during the fasting hours, while people can still consume water and other zero-calorie drinks during intermittent fasting periods. </div><div><br></div><div>Both fasting practices appear to improve kidney health, a growing area of concern. </div><div><br></div><div>The Straits Times recently reported that for every one million Malays, 459 required dialysis in 2022, compared with 150 per million for Chinese, and 183 for the Indian population.</div><div><br></div><div>A study published in the Saudi Journal of Kidney Diseases and Transplantation in 2010 found that patients with chronic kidney disease experienced enhanced kidney function after fasting throughout the month of Ramadan.</div><div><br></div><div>Research by the American Society of Nephrology in 2020 showed that 62.5 per cent of patients with chronic kidney disease, who practised intermittent fasting for 12 months, experienced an average 18.8 per cent improvement in the Glomerular Filtration Rate, which is used to measure the level of kidney function. </div><div><br></div><div>Experts tell ST that fasting practices have been linked to health benefits, including the prevention or improvement of conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure, which are major causes of chronic kidney disease in Singapore. </div><div><br></div><div>Diabetes and high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, can damage blood vessels in the kidneys and impair their function over time. </div><div><br></div><div>“Preventing or managing diabetes and hypertension can help lower the risk of developing chronic kidney disease. These changes may be more pronounced when combined with exercise.</div><div><br></div><div>Fasting can also help rebalance ghrelin and leptin levels, leading to improved appetite control, reduced food cravings and better weight management, notes Dr Tan. </div><div><br></div><div>Ghrelin and leptin are hormones that regulate hunger and satiety. Ghrelin, often called the “hunger hormone”, stimulates appetite, while leptin signals fullness and regulates energy balance. </div><div><br></div><div>Dr Aziz Noordin, a family physician and director at Tampines Family Medicine Clinic, has observed both improved and worsened blood pressure and sugar levels among Muslim patients fasting during Ramadan. </div><div><br></div><div>“The disciplined eating pattern during the eating window may encourage a person to make healthier food choices and practise portion control. But dehydration, overeating during non-fasting hours, missing their medications or reducing the dose on their own can cause patients’ blood pressure and sugar levels to worsen,” says Dr Aziz.</div><div><br></div><div>The benefits of fasting, Ms Seto says, can be reaped when one eats sensibly during the eating window. </div><div><br></div><div>She advises people to use the Health Promotion Board’s My Healthy Plate as a guide. In fact, patients with advanced chronic kidney disease or poorly controlled diabetes are considered high-risk for fasting based on the International Diabetes Federation and Diabetes and Ramadan International Alliance.” </div><div><br></div><div>High risk for fasting refers to individuals who may face potential adverse effects or complications if they engage in the practice. </div><div><br></div><div>Dr Wong also highlights that everyone’s response to fasting can vary, and a more comprehensive understanding of the long-term effects of different fasting patterns on kidney health requires further research.</div><div><br></div><div>Who should avoid fasting?</div><div><br></div><div>Fasting during Ramadan requires a Muslim to abstain from food and drink during the fasting hours. People who may need to avoid fasting, or consult a healthcare professional before attempting such a regimen, include the following groups.</div><div><br></div><div>Children and adolescents </div><div>Children and teenagers have specific nutritional requirements for growth and development, says Dr Tan. Fasting may interfere with their nutritional needs, affecting their physical and cognitive development.</div><div><br></div><div>Pregnant and breastfeeding women</div><div>This group of women, Dr Tan highlights, requires more nutrition to support foetal growth and lactation. Fasting may lead to inadequate nutrient intake and dehydration, which could affect the mother’s and foetus’ well-being.</div><div><br></div><div>Older adults</div><div>This group of people has special nutritional needs and may have underlying medical conditions that could be negatively affected by fasting, says Ms Seto.</div><div><br></div><div>For instance, some seniors may suffer from malnutrition or have vitamin and mineral deficiencies that could worsen with fasting.</div><div><br></div><div>People with Type 1 diabetes and on insulin therapy</div><div>While an increasing number of clinical trials have shown that intermittent fasting is safe for people with Type 2 diabetes – which is characterised by high blood sugar, insulin resistance and relative lack of insulin – there have been a lack of studies in those with Type 1 diabetes, says Dr Tan. </div><div><br></div><div>Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the cells that make insulin are destroyed by the body.</div><div><br></div><div>“Fasting may not be advisable for people with Type 1 diabetes as the intermittent fasting eating pattern may result in unsafe levels of hypoglycemia during the fasting period,” he notes. </div><div><br></div><div>Hypoglycemia is a condition characterised by low blood sugar levels. It typically occurs in people with diabetes who take insulin or other medications to lower blood sugar levels. </div><div><br></div><div>If fasting is not managed carefully, people with hypoglycemia, especially those taking blood sugar-lowering medications, may experience symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue and fainting, says Ms Seto. </div><div><br></div><div>Even among those with Type 2 diabetes, some may be considered high-risk and should not fast, cautions Dr Tan. #白宫義见<iframe style="background-image:url(https://i.ytimg.com/vi/17mwb9lswHs/hqdefault.jpg)" width="480" height="270" src="https://youtube.com/embed/17mwb9lswHs?si=uavqDLSW-UX4oMog" frameborder="0"></iframe>HL123 ( Healthy Living 123 Blog B)http://www.blogger.com/profile/15063682292744834136noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1819035984379172946.post-64402887921423795392024-03-25T08:31:00.001+08:002024-03-25T08:31:23.363+08:00岳健勇:邓小平之片言不宜教条化<div>岳健勇:邓小平之片言不宜教条化</div><div><br></div><div>https://www.zaobao.com.sg/forum/views/story20240325-3209423</div><div><br></div><div>事实表明,中国搭便车的代价不菲,那就是放弃经济民族主义。中国在1992年10月与美国达成的《市场准入备忘录》中,明确承诺“不对任何产品实施进口替代”。中国政府把工业化的希望寄托于西方跨国公司主动的技术转让——这是放弃自主发展的重要信号。</div><div><br></div><div>据说邓小平在1979年1月访美途中说过这样一句话:“回头看看这几十年来,凡是和美国搞好关系的国家,都富起来了。”尽管不乏严肃学者对此传言的真实性存疑,但多年来,在华人世界里,对此说不加质疑、照单全收者众,尤其是在当下中美关系极度紧张,影响到中国国运的关键时刻,重温这段“邓语录”似乎更具有某种不容置疑的政治正确性。</div><div><br></div><div>其实,这段话在学术上经不起严格推敲。“追随美国”既不是国家富强的充分条件,甚至也谈不上是必要条件。比如,“美国最亲密和最有价值的合作伙伴之一”(美国国务院网站)的近邻墨西哥,迄今依然是一个发展中国家,且国内贫富差距巨大,基尼系数高达0.546,近三分之一人口生活在贫困线以下。</div><div><br></div><div>战后芬兰工业化取得极大成功。芬兰于1948年加入布雷顿森林体系,作为中立国,芬兰没有接受马歇尔援助,工业化成功主要是源于广袤的苏联市场以及国家对经济的有力干预,而与“追随美国”无关。</div><div><br></div><div>邓小平乃政治家,其片言只语或未经深思熟虑,且国家刚刚走出文革乱局,领导者对外部世界认知不足,本在情理之中。邓眼中的“追随富强者”,主要是东亚四小龙等新兴工业化经济体。问题是,“东亚奇迹”的出现离不开冷战的特殊背景,四小龙均为内部市场狭小的小型经济体,没有美国对它们单方面开放国内市场,并提供相当的技术转让,甚至默认它们(韩国和台湾)推行新重商主义方针,“东亚奇迹”恐无从谈起。</div><div><br></div><div>后发国家与美国保持友好固然重要,但能否换来美国助力实现现代化,取决于该国对于美国的战略价值。</div><div><br></div><div>冷战后期,中苏反目,中美为对付共同敌人苏联,在战略上互有所求,这是1980年代中美蜜月的主要根源。美国对经济贫弱的中国给予很大帮助,但力度没有超过昔日对东亚四小龙的扶持,如始终不给中国产品以“普惠制待遇”(Generalized System of Preferences)。</div><div><br></div><div>1989年天安门事件后,觉察到“全球资本主义制度性胜利”这一历史大变局的邓小平,为中国制定了24字方针的“韬晦”战略;同时,他也对中美重修旧好寄予厚望,由此奠定了中美关系成为中国对外政策“重中之重”的基础。</div><div><br></div><div>天安门事件令中美关系冷却,但美国依然视中国为助它在远东掣肘苏联和日本的重要帮手。转折点出现在1991年12月,苏联解体导致中国对美国的战略价值急剧下降。须要指出的是,在冷战结束和苏联解体前后,美国外交政策开始受到现实主义和自由主义“民主和平论”(福山的“历史终结论”)的双重影响。1992年初,布什政府秘密制定“国防计划指针”,将冷战后美国外交政策的首要目标,确定为“阻止出现任何全球性大国挑战美国的领导地位”。</div><div><br></div><div>克林顿政府1993年出台“全面接触”中国的政策,就是在此背景下发生的。其战略涵义在于:未来中国只能是一个新兴市场,不可以成为另一个德国或日本。“接触中国”的终极目标,是推动中国政权的和平更迭;与此同时,通过把中国深度融入世界经济,允许其搭便车,以便尝到经济繁荣的甜头,心甘情愿做美国领导下的自由主义国际秩序的坚定捍卫者。</div><div><br></div><div>急于重建政权合法性而搭便车</div><div>邓在天安门事件后一度忧心于西方针对社会主义和发展中国家发起的“没有硝烟的战争”,他把和平与发展称为“两大问题”,尽管他没有否定“和平与发展”已成为“时代主题”的官方表述。邓急于重建中共政权的合法性,为此不计代价追求出口导向经济成长的发展路线,与美国融合中国的大战略恰相吻合。</div><div><br></div><div>事实表明,中国搭便车的代价不菲,那就是放弃经济民族主义。值得回顾的是,1960年至1980年代初,东亚发展型国家的经济成功,在相当程度上得益于产业政策指引下进口替代的坚定实施。相较于此,中国在1992年10月与美国达成的《市场准入备忘录》中,明确承诺“不对任何产品实施进口替代”。这是中国随之推出的“以市场换技术”战略的重要背景,表明中国政府把工业化的希望寄托于西方跨国公司主动的技术转让——这是中国放弃自主发展的重要信号。</div><div><br></div><div>不仅如此,肇始于1986年美欧主导的关贸总协定(GATT)最后一轮乌拉圭回合谈判,正是以“无差别市场准入”为由,把“排斥产业政策,否定进口替代”的新自由主义理念,落实为即将取而代之的世界贸易组织(WTO)的一整套经济与贸易规则。</div><div><br></div><div>这一年,正是发展中国家多年来谋求建立公平合理的国际经济新秩序(史称“南方的挑战”)最终失败的一年。也是在同一年,中国正式申请恢复在GATT缔约国地位。上述变化表明:中国在改革开放最初十年,即已面临日趋不利的发展环境。</div><div><br></div><div>1995年1月,世贸组织正式成立,中国受到来自美国以及布雷顿森林机构(世贸组织、国际货币基金和世界银行)要求施行激进贸易和投资自由化的巨大“体系压力”。在此刚性压力面前,邓小平对美友好的“韬晦”战略全然无效——中国为取得持续的外向型高速增长,惟有牺牲自主发展。</div><div><br></div><div>在克林顿时期(1993年至2001年),由于新经济勃兴,美国国力空前提高,这激发了美国对外政策的单边主义倾向。对中国实力的藐视以及对中国市场的觊觎,促成美国支持中国加入世贸的决策。对中国政治上“拒变”的不满,则提高了美国对华“接触”政策中的“遏制”含量。及至小布什上台,中美走向对抗已成大势,这一点并不因中共在2002年十六大报告中,放弃其长期奉行的“反霸”宗旨而有根本改变。</div><div><br></div><div>黄金十年“大发展”实属偶然</div><div>九一一事件改变了美国国际战略。美国为打赢全球反恐战争,必须取得中国合作(中国领导人审时度势也功不可没),遂大大减轻了对中国的压力。从这一意义上讲,中国入世后黄金十年“大发展”实属偶然!假如没有发生九一一,“韬晦”也罢,“追随”也罢,能够改变美国遏制中国的总态势吗?</div><div><br></div><div>洞悉国际政治本质的大政治家丘吉尔雄辩地指出:“没有永恒的朋友,没有永恒的敌人,只有永恒的利益。”美国衡量敌友,从来都是以利益划线。如果国家利益受到威胁,哪怕是盟友,也毫不犹豫要加以遏制(尽管与遏制共产主义的内涵不同),1980年代风靡美国的“排日风潮”(Japan bashing)就是最好的例证。</div><div><br></div><div>由此可见,“友好”只有在国家利益不相冲突时才有意义。在现实主义传统根深蒂固的美国看来,守成大国与新兴大国之间,永远存在难以调和的结构性冲突,这不是后者单纯示好、甚至示弱就可以轻易化解。即使中国不搞战狼外交,即使中国目前还只是徒具庞大规模、尚处在半边缘依附发展状态的经济上的“泥足巨人”,其政治经济影响力、对世界资源和势力范围的争夺,已然令美国寝食难安。</div><div><br></div><div>作为大国,中国天然拥有更多选择,通过主动和有效的政治经济改革,以及精湛的外交来减少外部敌意,最终实现自主发展基础上的和平崛起,是完全可能的。这比之罔顾国际政治常识以及时代背景的改变,机械地将邓小平昔日言论视为解决中美对抗和国家发展困境的灵丹妙药,甚至不顾国格尊严对美低首示好,去徒劳地争取美国的释怀和容纳,是否更值得去努力?</div><div><br></div><div>作者是伦敦政治经济学院政治学博士</div><div><br></div><div>伦敦政治经济学院访问学者</div>HL123 ( Healthy Living 123 Blog B)http://www.blogger.com/profile/15063682292744834136noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1819035984379172946.post-80731041336274113182024-03-25T08:01:00.001+08:002024-03-25T08:01:49.280+08:00早安 2024-03-25<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
