Effects of CR or exercise on coronary heart disease risk factors (Ref: H08A12)

How does Calorie restriction (CR) or exercise affects coronary heart disease risk factors?

Coronary heart disease (CHD) risk factors and the risk of CHD increase with increased adiposity. Fat loss induced by negative energy balance improves all metabolic CHD risk factors.

Data from a study by Fontana L, Villareal DT, Weiss EP, Racette SB, Steger-May K, Klein S, Holloszy JO; and the Washington University School of Medicine CALERIE Group. (Division of Geriatrics and Nutritional Sciences, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO 63110, USA. lfontana@im.wustl.edu) provide evidence that CR-induced and EX-induced negative energy balance result in substantial and similar improvements in the major risk factors for CHD in normal-weight and overweight middle-aged adults.
