Vegetarians and vegans who prepare the majority of their own meals may be at risk of iodine deficiency. Iodine is essential in regulating thyroid hormones, metabolism, growth, and organ function. 

Just be sure to include about 1/4 teaspoon of iodized salt per person in home-made food everyday.
