Coffee Drinking and Mortality in 10 European Countries: A Multinational Cohort Study
15 August 2017
Abstract
Background:
The relationship between coffee consumption and mortality in diverse European populations with variable coffee preparation methods is unclear.
Objective:
To examine whether coffee consumption is associated with all-cause and cause-specific mortality.
Design:
Prospective cohort study.
Setting:
10 European countries.
Participants:
521 330 persons enrolled in EPIC (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition).
Measurements:
Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs estimated using multivariable Cox proportional hazards models. The association of coffee consumption with serum biomarkers of liver function, inflammation, and metabolic health was evaluated in the EPIC Biomarkers subcohort (n = 14 800).
Results:
During a mean follow-up of 16.4 years, 41 693 deaths occurred. Compared with nonconsumers, participants in the highest quartile of coffee consumption had statistically significantly lower all-cause mortality (men: HR, 0.88 [95% CI, 0.82 to 0.95]; P for trend < 0.001; women: HR, 0.93 [CI, 0.87 to 0.98]; P for trend = 0.009). Inverse associations were also observed for digestive disease mortality for men (HR, 0.41 [CI, 0.32 to 0.54]; P for trend < 0.001) and women (HR, 0.60 [CI, 0.46 to 0.78]; P for trend < 0.001). Among women, there was a statistically significant inverse association of coffee drinking with circulatory disease mortality (HR, 0.78 [CI, 0.68 to 0.90]; P for trend < 0.001) and cerebrovascular disease mortality (HR, 0.70 [CI, 0.55 to 0.90]; P for trend = 0.002) and a positive association with ovarian cancer mortality (HR, 1.31 [CI, 1.07 to 1.61]; P for trend = 0.015). In the EPIC Biomarkers subcohort, higher coffee consumption was associated with lower serum alkaline phosphatase; alanine aminotransferase; aspartate aminotransferase; γ-glutamyltransferase; and, in women, C-reactive protein, lipoprotein(a), and glycated hemoglobin levels.
Limitations:
Reverse causality may have biased the findings; however, results did not differ after exclusion of participants who died within 8 years of baseline. Coffee-drinking habits were assessed only once.
Conclusion:
Coffee drinking was associated with reduced risk for death from various causes. This relationship did not vary by country.

Very low blood pressure -- What a blood pressure reading of 70/40 means
Https://www.caring.com/charts/blood-pressure-70-40
Notes from the geriatrician on the care of those ages 80 and over:
This level of blood pressure can be very concerning in an older adult. If it's new, it can signal a problem such as dehydration, infection, or internal bleeding. Low blood pressure like this can also be due to taking too much hypertension medication, or it can be a side effect of a medication prescribed for another reason.
This range of blood pressure also puts older people at risk for dizziness and falls, since blood flow to the brain tends to drop right after an older person stands up.
Don't delay in contacting a doctor regarding low blood pressure -- especially if the older person has a dementia such as Alzheimer's disease or is otherwise not able to clearly describe how he or she is feeling.
On the other hand, some diseases (such as Parkinson's disease) do cause chronic low blood pressure in older adults.
Definitions
Systolic (the first number) is the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats; it measures how hard the heart muscle is working to pump blood throughout the body.
Diastolic (the second number) is the pressure of the blood against the blood vessel walls between heartbeats when the heart is relaxed.
Abbreviations
BP = Blood Pressure
SP = Systolic Pressure
DP = Diastolic Pressure

Keep a group of good friends
From whatsapp:
I never sat on a sofa with my father & after my marriage, he had already left me.......
"Many years ago, after I got married I was sitting on a couch on a hot, humid day, sipping frozen juice during a visit to my father.
As I talked about adult life, marriage, responsibilities, and obligations, my father thoughtfully stirred the ice cubes in his glass and cast a clear, sober look at me.
"Never forget your friends," he advised, "they will become more important as you get older."
"Regardless of how much you love your family and the children you happen to have, you will always need friends."
"Remember to go out with them occasionally, do activities with them, call them ..."
"What a strange advice!" I thought. "I just entered the married world, I am an adult and surely my wife and the family that we will start will be everything I need to make sense of my life."
Yet I obeyed him; kept in touch with my friends and annually increased their number. Over the years, I became aware that my father knew what he was talking about!
In as much as time and nature carry out their designs and mysteries on a man, friends are the bulwarks of his life.
After 51 years of life, here is what I learned:
Time passes.
Life goes on.
The distances increase,
Children grow up & and become independent and although this separation often break the parents' hearts, their lives march on...
Jobs come and go.
Illusions, desires, attractions, sex ... weaken.
People do what they should not do.
The parents die.
Colleagues forget the favors.
The races are over.
But, true friends are always there, no matter how long or how many miles they are.
A friend is never more distant than the reach of a need, reaching out to you intervening in your favor, waiting for you with open arms or with blessings for your life.
When we started this adventure called LIFE, we did not know of the incredible joys or sorrows that were ahead.
We did not know how much we would need from one another.
Love your parents, take care of your children, but *keep a group of good friends*.🤗👍
Dedicated to all my Friends.

SOURCE: WHATSAPP ON 20170913.

Happiness helper #4: Lighten up
After just three weeks of bright-light therapy, more than 50% of the participants in a study about depression reported a better mood and sounder sleep. An hour of bright indoor light a day was as effective as antidepressants—and had no side effects. Best of all, mood continued to improve for weeks after treatment.
