What is Slow Heart Rate (Bradycardia)?

Having bradycardia (say "bray-dee-KAR-dee-uh") means your heart beats very slowly.

For most people, a heart rate of 60 to 100 beats a minute while at rest is considered normal.

If your heart beats less than 60 times a minute, your doctor may diagnose bradycardia.

A slow heart rate is sometimes normal and can be a sign of being very fit. Healthy young adults and athletes often have heart rates of less than 60 beats a minute.

For details, please visit http://www.webmd.com/heart-disease/tc/bradycardia-slow-heart-rate-overview

What Is A Normal Heart Beat (or Pulse Rate)?

Source: http://www.nemahealth.org/programs/healthcare/heart_rate_pulse.htm#3

A Resting Heart Rate anywhere in the range of 60 - 90 is considered in the normal range. Your Heart Rate will fluctuate a lot depending on such factors as your activity level and stress level. If however, your pulse is consistently above 90, you should consult with your physician. This condition is called tachycardia (increased heart rate).

Many athletes have pulse rates in the 40 - 60 range, depending on how fit they are. In general, a lower pulse rate is good.

Sometimes however, one's heart rate can be too low. This is known as bradycardia and can be dangerous, especially when blood pressure gets too low as well. Symptoms include weakness, loss of energy and fainting. If this situation applies, medical attention should be sought immediately.

If the pattern of beats or throbs you count is irregular (i. e. a beat is missed) take your pulse for a full minute. If you experience irregularities in your pulse on a consistent basis, you should consult with your personal physician.

Many factors influence heart rate. These include emotions, temperatures, your position or posture (sitting, standing, laying down), and your body size (if you are overweight for your size, your heart will have to work harder to supply energy to your body).

Plant-Based Diet Helps Reduce Premature Aging and Disease Risk

Source: http://www.pcrm.org/news/archive080916.html

In a study released today by The Lancet Oncology, Dean Ornish, M.D., and colleagues found that comprehensive lifestyle changes, including a low-fat vegan diet, increase the body’s ability to fight premature aging, cancer, heart disease, and other chronic diseases.

Twenty-four men participating in a prostate cancer study switched to a plant-based diet and added daily exercise and relaxation techniques.

Among other beneficial effects that were previously reported, the intervention led to increased levels of telomerase, an enzyme that protects and repairs DNA. Blood levels of telomerase increased by an average of 29 percent during the study.

A dry mouth ulcer near the middle of my lower lip. Food Allergy again?

On last Monday, my right middle tip had slight pain and it is better now but I still can feel the discomfort on and off. The right lower lip is slightly swollen.

Yesterday evening, I discovered that I have a dry mouth ulcer on near the middle my lower lip.

What is the cause?

The fish and chips taken on last Sunday??

Or something else??

My Dental Treatment on 2008-09-15

In the morning of 2008-09-15, Monday, I went to BDK Dental Clinic for simple scaling and polishing. The young female doctor did not do checking on my teeth.

I showed her the sketches by the specialist at NDC in May 2008 regarding the proposed operation on (a) a ceramic-browned tooth with chronic infection, (b) the possible internal decay within a gold crowned tooth done many years ago.

I told her I do not plan to have the two teeth operated because I do not have problem with the tooth with chronic infection, and I do not wish to let the specialist remove the gold crown of the second tooth, which never gives me any problem. She said, if nothing done, the gold crowned tooth will get worse. Well, I still two more months to make a decision.

I know that my teeth and gum conditions are much better than before my CRON and near vegetarian lifestyle. ---- My Health Achievement!

But I should get another dentist to assess and ascertain my dental conditions soon.

Purpose-driven eating? Why?

"Purpose-driven eating is very important;
you must eat for brain growth and development,
to prevent cancer and to stabilise hormones."

- Dr Ang Poon Liat, senior consultant paediatrician at the Paediatric Centre in Thomson Medical Centre.

Source: Mind Your Body of The Straits Times dated 11 September 2008

8 Brain Boosters (Brain Booster Foods in everyday life)

Want to sharpen your memory or up your child's IQ? The key lies in eating the right foods, many scientists and nutritionists claim. ESTHER TEO reports.

You might think that labelling some of the things you eat as 'brain food' might be stretching it a bit.

However, many scientists and nutritionists believe that foods you eat can directly affect the way your brain performs, that you can boost your intelligence quotient (IQ), focus your concentration, sharpen your memory and keep your mind young.

They may also have an effect on how children develop and grow.

So are we what we eat?

Dr Ang Poon Liat, senior consultant paediatrician at the Paediatric Centre in Thomson Medical Centre, said that a person is 20 per cent genes and 80 per cent food.

To him, nurture supersedes nature and one should eat for several reasons.

'Purpose-driven eating is very important; you must eat for brain growth and development, to prevent cancer and to stabilise hormones,' he said.

Aside from breastfeeding, which has proved to increase the IQ of babies and children, the food you feed your kids can also determine their academic potential.

Dr Ang identifies eight brain foods which should be part of your child's diet. However, these are foods that will benefit you through life.

1: Fish

Why: Fish like salmon, sardines and cod are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids which are essential for brain growth and function.

Dr Ang says: Not just salmon, all types of fish are good. You can even take cod fish body oil, which is rich in vitamin A, to supplement your diet. Your brain is 60 per cent fat, so fish is a good source of that.

2: Eggs

Why: Other than being a great protein source, egg yolks also have a high amount of choline - a nutrient in the B vitamin family - which helps in memory development.

Dr Ang says: The best way to eat your egg is soft boiled. Frying or having it hard boiled destroys its protein, causing it to be allergenic.

3: Nuts

Why: They provide vitamin E and are also a source of antioxidants that protect the membranes of brain cells against free radicals.

Dr Ang says: Macadamia and almonds are recommended. Ground peanuts are less ideal because they often result in allergic reactions.

4: Colourful vegetables

Why: They provide high levels of antioxidants that keep brain cells strong and healthy.

Dr Ang says: Choose fresh products in a wide variety of colours to give you a range of antioxidants. Also, go for brighter and hence more intense antioxidants, which help prevent cancer.

5: Wholegrains

Why: Provides gradual release of glucose that the brain needs to function due to the fibre regulating its release. It also contains B vitamins.

Dr Ang says: The slower release process of glucose prevents glucose swings - the process in which a child is energised and then quickly becomes fatigued. These mood changes are unhealthy for a child.

6: Berries

Why: High levels of antioxidants, such as vitamin C, which can help prevent cancer. Some studies have also shown improved memory.

Dr Ang says: The best fruits are berries. Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and even cherries. They are less sweet and present less sugar problems; also, they have antioxidant values that are rated the highest.

7: Beans

Why: These provide energy from protein to complex carbohydrates which are good brain foods. Proteins are needed to synthesise the nucleic acid of brain cells.

Dr Ang says: Green beans and red beans are good. As far as soya beans go, it is best to consume fermented soya products.

8: Yogurt

Why: Good source of protein and B and D vitamins, which are vital for the growth of brain tissue and neuro-transmitters.

Dr Ang says: Yogurt is preferred over milk because a semi-solid food is a better choice for a growing child. Also, because it is fermented, it is also pre-digested and is easier for a child to process.

My, Latte’s & GG’s Bone density tests on 6 Sept 08

In the evening (at about 7.30 pm) of 2008-09-06 (Saturday) I visited World Food Fair 2008 at Suntec with Latte and GG.

I had a bone density test at Biocalth booth. Results = T-score = -1.0 and Stiffness = 92 in the yellow zone meaning Low Bone Mass requiring me to take Biocalth 2 tablets 2 times daily.

At about 6.00 pm of 24 May 2008 (Saturday), I had a bone density test at All Link Medical & Health Products Pte Ltd booth at the Singapore Food Expo 2008. Results: T-score = -1.9

Therefore, My T-score has improved from –1.9 to –1.0 since 24 may 2008.

So I should take two tablets of my 600-mg calcium with Vitamin D instead of one from now on and control my coffee intake. And have the same test next year.

Latte’s result is better than mine. T-score = 0.7 and stiffness = 98.

GG’s result is also better than mine. T-score = 0.9 and stiffness = 100.

According to a lady at the booth, GG’s result should have been better than T-score = 0.7 because of her young age.

How to Reduce Your Biological Age [Ref: H08I09-1350]

Source: http://www.heartwizard.com/improve_biological_age.asp

Research shows that your biological age is a more accurate evaluation of your age, and the good news is that your biological age can actually become younger if you make healthy lifestyle choices.

An example of some simple choices might be more salads and less pizza for lunch, and more fruit and less pastry for dessert; forego one TV program in the evening and take a walk; and substitute a bottle of water for some of the soft drinks you consume each day.

Starting with a few minor changes is easy, and you will begin to see the healthy rewards, giving you the incentive to continue.

Say you’re 55 in calendar years – wouldn’t you like to look and feel 45? Wouldn’t you rather grow older at a much slower pace feeling energetic and totally alive? There are several factors that influence your biological age, and these factors are completely under your control. Let’s take a look at some.

Nutrition

Nutrition has to be the most important factor for good health. Our bodies are not unlike machines and like machines, we need the proper ‘fuel and maintenance’ to make us run smoothly and at optimal performance.

Eating plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits every day is vital. Fresh foods contain vitamins, minerals and nutrients that are lacking in processed and junk foods. Our body systems require these nutrients to do their jobs and keep us healthy. Beyond that, fresh foods contain enzymes needed for good digestion whereas processed foods have none.

By adopting a healthy diet, you’ll see the benefits now and most certainly later in life, such as a healthy heart, stable blood sugar levels, stronger bones, and far less risk of cancer.

How can good nutrition lower your biological age?

Getting the proper vitamins, minerals and nutrients ‘fuel’ every system in the body and cause it to work efficiently and optimally for a lifetime.

Proper nutrition provides you with more energy for work and play.
Proper nutrition helps you maintain a healthy weight.
Proper nutrition helps you maintain good bone health.
Proper nutrition promotes good sleep.
Proper nutrition promotes a healthy immune system.

Now that you realize how important good nutrition is, try changing one eating habit a week. Cut down on foods high in fat and begin replacing them with whole grain foods, low fat foods, and fresh fruit and vegetables. You'll be reaping the benefits of good nutrition before you know it!

Reduce Risk of Disease

Clinical research now points to several factors that have an influence on disease risk. The risk of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, allergies, digestive disorders, arthritis, diabetes, neurological conditions, just to name a few, are affected by poor diet, lack of exercise, insufficient water intake and lack of antioxidants.

None of the degenerative diseases mentioned are inevitable even in those individuals who have strong family genetic history. All disease and the process of aging is eventually a breakdown in the body's immune system.

It’s relatively simple to fortify and restore your immune system by adopting a nutritious diet, getting some exercise every day, drinking 8-10 glasses of water each day and taking an antioxidant supplement or eating sufficient quantities of fruits containing powerful antioxidants, such as blueberries, strawberries, grapes, etc. Such steps will provide optimum function leading to optimum health and a younger biological age.

Exercise Of the top 10 biomarkers of aging, 5 of them are directly related to how much/little you exercise your body.

Biomarkers are objectively measured variables which help in the assessment of determining your biological age.

MUSCLE MASS: The amount of lean muscle tissue on your body
STRENGTH: Your ability to resist weight
RESTING HEART RATE
BODY FAT %: The per cent body fat of your body
AEROBIC CAPACITY: Your body's ability to process oxygen from the air and move it into your bloodstream and throughout your body

Supplements

A healthy, balanced diet is vital to good health, but let’s face it, unless you can manage to eat a totally organic diet, our fresh foods are not as nutrient-packed as they once were before the advent of commercial farming with pesticides and other toxins in the soil. And the flip-side of the coin is that many of us eat too much fast food or processed food, which have no nutritional value.

Supplementation is an excellent way to ensure that you are getting the vital nutrients you need every day. Remember, damage from nutrient deficiency is slow, but cumulative and ultimately results in disease states.

A dietary supplement (also known as food supplement) is a preparation intended to supply nutrients (such as vitamins, minerals, fatty acids or amino acids) that are missing or not consumed in sufficient quantity in a person's diet.

A multivitamin/mineral each day is not optional, it’s necessary for good health.

Calcium and Vitamin D are necessary for maintaining good bone health, and many don’t get the amount they need from their diet.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids (fish oil) are vital for heart health, but few of us eat enough cold water fish to meet our body’s needs.

Green Tea extract, grape seed extract, berry extracts, vitamins C and E, beta-carotene and selenium all perform as antioxidants and help neutralize free radicals in the body that would otherwise cause damage to our cells. Over time, this damage is cumulative and causes aging and eventually death.

There are many more herbal supplements beneficial for prevention and treatment of numerous conditions, too numerous to mention here, but don’t doubt that supplementation is a healthy addition to your lifestyle.

More Options for Reducing Bio Age

Everyday we are exposed to bad bacteria and toxins in the food we eat, the air we breathe and the water we drink. Body Cleanses, such as liver, colon, and kidney can help revitalize and rebalance your body. Everyone could benefit from a healthy cleanse at least twice a year to remove toxins that are storing in your systems.

If you have a chronic health problem, it is likely due to one or more of the following: microbial infestation/imbalance, virus, parasites, weakened immunity, emotional imbalance, poor diet, dehydration, heavy metal toxicity, and constitutional/genetic factors. Microbes include yeast, fungi, and bacteria. The existence, and in some cases, over-growth (too much "bad" bacteria vs. "good" bacteria), of microbes (and their waste) will impair function of the systems involved, which leads to disease.

Massage, yoga and meditation are recommended by many health professionals for stress relief. Our everyday life is filled with stressful situations, large and small. We sometimes don’t even notice that we’re stressed because it has become so commonplace.

However, that doesn’t mean that stress doesn’t damage our health. Stress symptoms can be physical and mental, and learning to cope with challenges, as well as relieving them promotes better health and a younger biological age!

Suggestions for lowering your biological age:

Do eat a balanced diet and include plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits. Cut down on fat, salt and sugar in your diet.

Drink plenty of water. Drink fewer caffeinated drinks. Drink alcohol moderately.

Get more exercise – walk, garden, take the stairs, park farther from your destination. Don’t sit on the couch quite as much.

Do take a quality multivitamin/mineral supplement every day plus a variety of antioxidants to fight free radical damage, Omega-3 (fish oil) capsules for heart health, and extra calcium and vitamin D for bone health.

Do get enough quality sleep every night so that your body can rest and repair itself.

Try a whole-body cleanse twice a year to clear the toxins from your body and rejuvenate your health!

Manage stress by learning deep breathing exercises and meditation. Practice yoga and get regular massages. Don’t let stress ruin your physical and emotional health.

If you decide to start making the best choices in Nutrition, Exercise, and Supplementation, in time, you will improve your health and fitness, have more energy and lower your Biological Age.

Begin to make your changes today- it is never too early and never too late to grow younger!

My Real biological age is almost half of my chronological age ??

In the evening (at about 7.30 pm) of 2008-09-06 (Saturday) I visited World Food Fair 2008 at Suntec with Latte.

I had a health test at Lifestream booth.

I was asked to stand on something that looked like an electronic weighing scale I have at home.

The following was My Health Report Card:

(a) Age: (Confidential for this blog for privacy. But my age is almost 60.)

(b) Weight: 57.5 kg.

Note: Bare feet with clothes, wallet, and other personal belongings. So the actual weight should be about 56.0 kg.

(c) Body fat percentage = 16.5 % (Normal)

(d ) Organ fat index = 9.0 (Normal)

(e) Basal metabolic rate (BMR) = 1288 kcal/day

Note: According the report card, my BMR ( for age 50 – 69) should be 1350 kcal/ day.

(f) Real biological age = 33 years old.

What a surprise! I cannot believe that my real biological age is almost half my chronological age (i.e. real age).

If this is true, I must congratulate myself for this health achievement by sticking to my near-vegetarian High Fiber + Low Sugar + Low +Low Salt +Low protein + Low fat diet and Calorie Restriction with Optimal Nutrition (CRON) practice in the last few years although I hardly exercise.

A word of caution, my weight has been increasing from my lowest weight of 53.3 kg in the morning of 18 July 2008. Something must be done.
