Why need to take dietary supplements (Health Supplements or Vitamins Supplements) (Giving your body an extra boost)
by LISABEL TING
A balanced diet won't cover all the nutrients your body needs, argues nutrition expert Jeffrey Blumberg. One way to boost nutrient intake would be to take dietary supplements. LISABEL TING reports
An apple a day keeps the doctor away, you may have heard your mother say.
However, is one apple every 24 hours truly enough? And what about the nutritional benefits of other fruits, such as oranges or guavas?
Research on nutrition is constantly evolving and it is still difficult to say for certain what the human body really needs to stay healthy.
Mind Your Body spoke to Dr Jeffrey Blumberg (right), director of the antioxidants research laboratory at Tufts University during his visit here last month, to find out about the latest developments in nutrition.
He said that in the last decade or so, there has been a paradigm shift. 'From simply avoiding malnutrition, the focus has moved to preventive nutrition which is about promoting optimal health and physical fitness, and reducing the risk of chronic diseases.'
While eating an apple a day may indeed ensure that you meet the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin C and lower your risk of falling ill, he emphasised that there is a big difference between being 'not sick' and 'well'.
'You may be doing okay if you have an adequate nutrient intake,' he said. 'But recent research has shown that if you take in more nutrients, above the level of your RDA, it could have positive effects on your physical fitness, bone density and cognitive function, which are all affected by nutrition.'
Dr Blumberg also shed new light on nutritional requirements for the elderly.
It was once thought that our nutritional requirements decrease as we grow older, shrinking along with our rate of physical activity and muscle mass.
However, it has now been proven to be otherwise. In fact, our nutrient requirements gradually increase with age.
Also, older people are more susceptible to chronic diseases, which heighten the amount of nutrients that they need.
'The elderly are also the age group that take the most medication frequently, and on a long-term basis. Many of these drugs interfere with the adsorption, utilisation or distribution of nutrients,' he added.
As nutrition is one of the keys to living a long and healthy life, how can we best get all that we need?
'Almost nobody fulfils all the requirements for all the nutrients all the time,' he said. He suggested that for those who don't, taking a dietary supplement would be good.
'It's difficult to change a person's eating habits,' he said. 'But taking a supplement every day is simple, and can easily help people to meet their minimum requirements.'
An example of dietary supplements would be multivitamins, calcium supplements or vitamin C tablets .
He also said that proper nutrition should start as early as possible as nutrition in our developmental stages is critical.
'Between the ages of 12 and 18 is when girls put down almost all of their bone mass. If you're drinking soda and not milk, then your bones won't be strong,' he said.
While it may seem dangerous to pop a dietary supplement packed full of nutrients on top of your regular diet, he said that it is perfectly safe. That's provided you are not taking medication for a serious illness.
'While it is possible to overdose on a vitamin, it is hard to do so,' he assured.
'There is something called the tolerable upper level (TUL), or the highest amount that scientific studies show that you can consume without harm. For some vitamins, such as vitamin B12, no one has found a TUL yet. For others, it is mostly 20, 30 times above the RDA.'

7 guidelines to follow in eating for Calorie Restriction when straight calorie counting is impractical (by Harvard Medical School)
(2) When you eat meat, cut out fat and cut down portion sizes. Choose lean cuts of meat and modest amounts — about 3½ or 4 ounces per serving.
(3) Avoid fried foods. Frying foods adds fat and calories. For stovetop cooking, it’s better either to stir-fry foods in nonstick pans lightly coated with a cooking-oil spray or to braise them in broth or wine. Baking, broiling, and roasting add no extra fat to your meals.
(4) Use low-fat or nonfat dairy foods. Milk, yogurt, and cheese are good sources of protein and calcium, but the whole-milk versions of these dairy products are very high in fat.
(5) Avoid fast foods. Hamburgers, chicken nuggets, French fries, and other fast-food meals and snacks tend to promote weight gain for two reasons. First, they are high in fat, calories, or both. Second, the “value meals” are often excessively large and tempt you to overeat.
(6) Avoid high-calorie, low-nutrient snacks. Chips and other deep-fried snacks are high in fat and therefore calories. But even snacks labeled “low-fat” are often high in calories because they contain large amounts of sugars and other carbohydrates.
(7) Watch what you drink. Regular sodas, fruit juices, and, especially, alcoholic beverages are high in calories.

Irritant Dermatitis (skin allergy/inflammation of the skin) caused by pesticide in Pak Choi or Xia bai cai (Eczema?)
However, after taking a few sips of the smoothie, a slightly itchy and red rash of dermatitis appeared at the part of my right hand just below the last two fingers. (Please the photo above.) The culprit was probably the pesticide contained in the vegetable.
I threw away the remaining smoothie.
My comments: I should try a Banana + Pak Choi smoothie with an organic Pak Choi next time to ascertain the skin problem was due to the pesticide contained in the vegetable.

I used an expired cooking oil due to oversight
Only after I last used the cooking oil on 2nd April 2009 to cook fish vegetable soup for BB and GG, she told me that the cooking oil was expired in last September!
It was fortunate that there was no food poisoning for using the expired cooking oil. It might be due to the very little quantity I used for cooking soup.
The lesson learned: Always monitor the expiry date of processed food if we have to use it. Of course, if there is a choice I would not use cooking oil at all.
Smoothie: Ripe Banana + Ripe Thailand Honey Mango + Ice for the first time Ref: i09d08
At about 2.50 pm on 2009-04-08 (Wednesday) I made smoothie with the following:
(a) Ripe banana without skin = 100g
(b) Ripe Thailand Honey Mango without skin = 100g
(c) Ice cubes = 140g
Method: Use Smoothie Function of Philips Blender HR 2094 3 times for about 20 seconds each time with a 5-second break in between
Total Estimated Dietary Fiber = 2.6g (banana) + 1.8g (mango) = 4.40 g.
Total Estimated Energy = 154.00 kcal
Smoothie produced with Philips Blender HR 2094 = About 240 ml
No. of Serves = 1
Tasters: Myself.
Verdict: Good
My Comment on the smoothie:
Very smooth. Both Banana and mango are alkaline foods rich in natural plant enzymes. This smoothie provides 4.40 grams or 17.6% of our daily requirements 25 grams of dietary fibres.

What Is Anemia? (by National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute)
Hemoglobin is an iron-rich protein that gives blood its red color. This protein helps red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.
If you have anemia, your body doesn’t get enough oxygen-rich blood. As a result, you may feel tired and have other symptoms.
With severe or long-lasting anemia, the lack of oxygen in the blood can damage the heart, brain, and other organs of the body. Very severe anemia may even cause death.
Overview
Red blood cells are disc-shaped and look like doughnuts without holes in the center. They carry oxygen and remove carbon dioxide (a waste product) from your body.
These cells are made in the bone marrow—a sponge-like tissue inside the bones. Red blood cells live for about 120 days in the bloodstream and then die.
White blood cells and platelets (PLATE-lets) also are made in the bone marrow. White blood cells help fight infection.
Platelets stick together to seal small cuts or breaks on the blood vessel walls and stop bleeding. With some types of anemia, you may have low numbers of all three types of blood cells.
Anemia has three main causes: blood loss, lack of red blood cell production, or high rates of red blood cell destruction. These causes may be due to a number of diseases, conditions, or other factors.
Outlook
Many types of anemia can be mild, short term, and easily treated. Some types can even be prevented with a healthy diet. Other types can be treated with dietary supplements.
However, certain types of anemia may be severe, long lasting, and life threatening if not diagnosed and treated.
If you have signs and symptoms of anemia, you should see your doctor to find out whether you have the condition. Treatment will depend on what has caused the anemia and how severe it is.

My Dietary Supplements taken daily (with effect from 2009-04-06) --- Iron-deficiency anemia?
(b) 1 x 1000 mg vitamin C tablet (Kordel)
(c) 1 x Century Life maxi-hair tablet
(d) 2 x “Vitacal 600+D” calcium (600g) +Vitamin D (200 IU). (Note: On 2008-1-17, replaced “Caltrate 600+D” calcium (600g) +Vitamin D (200 IU) with “Vitacal 600+D”)
(e ) 1 x 50 mg zinc tablet (GNC) from 080228(f) 1 tablet of of “NOW” brand Iron Complex with vitamins and herbs (27 mg of iron per tablet, 155% of daily value of RDA) (Re-take from 2009-04-06)
Note: Reason for taking this iron supplement: Based on the microscopic blood analysis on 4th April 2009 at the booth of Science Arts Co Pte Ltd at Lian He Wan Bao Beauty & Healthcare Fair 2009 at Suntec, I may be suffering from (mild) iron-deficiency anemia.
I hardly eat meat and the iron from my mainly vegetarian diet and the dietary supplements taken by me before today probably did not provide me with sufficient iron nutrient.
But I need to be cautious on the amount of iron supplement taken daily to avoid overdose causing other health problems!

The story of a bottle of “NOW” brand Iron Complex
I threw away the first bottle after using it for a short while because I was afraid of iron overdose and thought I would not need it anymore.
In addition, I did not like the herb smell.
But after my microscopic blood test on 4 April 2009 at the booth of Science Arts Co Pte Ltd at Lian He Wan Bao Beauty & Healthcare Fair 2009 at Suntec, I may need to consume the remaining second bottle of “NOW” brand Iron Complex.
This is my last report on iron complex in my blog “My Living Diary” dated 2008-01-24”:
“1 x Now Brand Iron complex (Non-Constipating) (Iron 27 mg) from 29 October 2007 on even dates only. But it was taken daily since 12-11-2007 to try out whether it is OK to this amount. Taken till 26-12-2007 because I may be suffering from mild Osteoarthritis. My right knee problem may be the early symptoms may be mild or barely noticeable.”
