The feature you are seeing is called Live Caption, a built-in Android accessibility tool. It automatically generates a speech-to-text transcript of any audio playing on your device. You did not install it yourself because it comes pre-installed as part of the Android operating system, and it is very common to accidentally turn it on via the volume buttons. [1, 2, 3]
You can remove this annoying box from your screen using one of the quick methods below:
Method 1: The Quickest Fix (Volume Button)
  1. Press either the Volume Up or Volume Down button on the side of your phone to bring up the volume slider.
  2. Look directly below or next to the volume slider for a small Live Caption icon (it looks like a small square speech bubble with text or horizontal lines inside).
  3. Tap the icon to turn it off. The text box will instantly disappear. [1, 2]
Method 2: Turn it Off Permanently in Settings
If you want to ensure it doesn't accidentally pop up again, you can disable it entirely in your system settings:
  1. Open your phone's Settings app (the gear icon).
  2. Scroll down and tap Accessibility (on some phones, you may need to look under Sound & Vibration instead).
  3. Tap on Live Caption.
  4. Toggle the switch next to Use Live Caption to Off. [1, 2]
(Tip: In that same settings menu, you can also turn off the setting that places the Live Caption shortcut icon on your volume slider so you don't accidentally click it again in the future). [1, 2]
