My Microsoft 365 Personal subscription will expire in October 2026. How long grace period will I be given to continue to enjoy the full service if I turn off the recurring billing payment?

There is no grace period to continue enjoying the full premium service for free after your expiration date. If you turn off recurring billing, your Microsoft 365 Personal subscription will remain fully active and usable only until its exact expiration date in October 2026. [1, 2, 3]
Once that date passes, your access to the full service changes immediately as detailed below. [2]

What Happens Immediately Upon Expiration

  • App Restrictions: Your premium desktop apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) will enter a read-only, reduced-functionality mode. You can view and print documents but cannot create or edit them. [2, 4, 5, 6, 7]
  • Storage Downgrade: Your cloud storage limits will instantly revert back to the free tier capacity. This drops your OneDrive storage from 1 TB to 5 GB and your Outlook.com storage to 15 GB. [2]

The Data Freeze Buffer

While you lose full service privileges immediately, Microsoft does not delete your files instantly. [2, 4, 8]
  • If you are over the 5 GB free limit: Your OneDrive account will freeze. You will still be able to view and download your existing files for a short period (typically up to 30 days), but you cannot sync, edit, or upload new files.
  • Email Interruption: Your Outlook.com account will stop sending and receiving emails if your stored data exceeds the free tier limits. [2, 4, 9]
To avoid service disruption, make sure to download and back up any files exceeding 5 GB from your OneDrive before your renewal date in October. [2, 10]
If you would like, I can guide you through the steps to check your exact expiration date or show you how to manually back up your OneDrive files to your local computer. Which would you prefer?
